Hydrogen gas: uses in research

Also: H2, biohydrogen

Hydrogen is a clean fuel that can be made by algae and by splitting water. It is also studied as a medical antioxidant.

Readiness: lab lab studies · prototype demonstrated objects · commercial products or buildings in real use · review summaries of other studies.

Hydrogen as an antioxidant

Ohsawa and colleagues found inhaled hydrogen selectively reduced harmful oxygen radicals in rats.

As reported in: Ohsawa, Ishikawa, Takahashi et al. (2007). Hydrogen acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals. Nature Medicine. doi:10.1038/nm1577

Algae making hydrogen

Melis and colleagues got green algae to produce hydrogen gas for days by starving them of sulfur.

Built / tested: biohydrogen
