Nanoparticle warming

Ansari, Kite and Ramirez modelled artificial aerosols such as ~9-micrometre conductive nanorods made from Mars materials, finding they could warm Mars more than 5,000 times more effectively than the best greenhouse gases.

As reported in: Ansari, Kite, Ramirez et al. (2024). Feasibility of keeping Mars warm with nanoparticles. Science Advances. doi:10.1126/sciadv.adn4650

prototype MOXIE: making oxygen on Mars 2022

First oxygen made on another planet

Hoffman, Hecht and colleagues reported MOXIE produced oxygen from Martian atmospheric CO2 by solid oxide electrolysis seven times in 2021, the first demonstration of in situ resource utilization on another planet.

As reported in: Hoffman, Hecht, Rapp et al. (2022). Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE)—Preparing for human Mars exploration. Science Advances. doi:10.1126/sciadv.abp8636

Silica aerogel warming

Wordsworth, Kerber and Cockell showed through experiments and modelling that a thin layer of silica aerogel could warm regions of the Martian surface via a solid-state greenhouse effect, making them habitable to photosynthetic life.

As reported in: Wordsworth, Kerber, Cockell (2019). Enabling Martian habitability with silica aerogel via the solid-state greenhouse effect. Nature Astronomy. doi:10.1038/s41550-019-0813-0

Not enough CO2 to terraform Mars

Jakosky and Edwards inventoried CO2 reservoirs on Mars and concluded there is not enough accessible CO2 for significant greenhouse warming, so terraforming Mars is not possible with present-day technology.

As reported in: Jakosky, Edwards (2018). Inventory of CO2 available for terraforming Mars. Nature Astronomy. doi:10.1038/s41550-018-0529-6
