Circadian rhythms and the body clock: uses in research
Also: circadian clock, period gene, 2017 Nobel Prize, Hall Rosbash Young, day length
Almost all living things keep a roughly 24-hour internal clock. Work on the fruit fly period gene led to the 2017 Nobel Prize for Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael Young.

Konopka and Benzer found three fruit fly mutants with altered daily rhythms (one arrhythmic, one 19-hour and one 28-hour), all in the same gene on the X chromosome, later called period.

Hardin, Hall and Rosbash reported that the protein made by the Drosophila period gene feeds back on the daily cycling of its own messenger RNA.
