Magnetotactic bacteria
A review of magnetotactic bacteria and the magnetite crystals (magnetosomes) they grow.
As reported in: Faivre, Schüler (2008). Magnetotactic Bacteria and Magnetosomes. Chemical Reviews. doi:10.1021/cr078258w
Abstract only
Also: iron oxide, Fe3O4, magnetosomes
Magnetite is a naturally magnetic iron oxide. Some bacteria even grow chains of magnetite crystals to navigate. As nanoparticles it is studied for imaging, drug delivery, cancer heat therapy and pollutant removal. Biomedical entries are descriptive only.
Readiness: lab lab studies · prototype demonstrated objects · commercial products or buildings in real use · review summaries of other studies.
